A divorce would have been easier

The leading suspect in a California murder case made false allegations of ritual abuse back in 1987.

In 1987, Susan Polk claimed her then-18-month-old son was providing lurid details about suffering ritual abuse at day care. The terror in our son's eyes is too profound, she told The Chronicle at the time, and the details he has given about the blood . . . and about the screaming -- it's too much not to believe.

No substantiating evidence was ever found.

Her husband, Felix Polk, was found dead at their home after being beaten and stabbed several times. Susan Polk is being held on remand in the local jail after police investigators were led to believe that she was responsible, based on information and statements at the scene. I lived in the house next door to Felix and Susan on Elmwood Avenue in Berkeley during the early 1980's. While neither of them seemed all that sane, Susan clearly was a raving looney - imagining people in "strange" cars "stalking" her family. Too bad about Felix, and now that I know she was a former patient I have some sympathy for her, but this lady has been crazy for a long, long time.

I kept an eye on this story, because I expected to have to follow it up, especially if there was enough evidence for it to go to trial. But, there has been no sign of a trial, nor of a release (which would've happened pretty quickly) so hopefully, the authorities realised she was not a well woman and packed her off somewhere to get the help she needed.

I am doing research on the Polk case for a class. During said research, I came across several references to Polk's claim of her son's ritual abuse. However, I have not been able to track down any primary sources regarding this matter. It looks as if you are quoting a recent article from the Chronicle. Have you been able to locate any info from 1987?

The quote from the San Francisco Chronicle in 2002 states that she told this to the same newspaper in 1987, so that publication would be the place to ask. The journalist who wrote the piece I quoted clearly has access to the 1987 article.
