Bikini waxers against Bush!

Women are invited to take part in a most unusual protest this week, to coincide with George W. Bush's visit to the UK. The Scrap-Bush Women's Collective invites us to protest by

Shaving their bushes and sending the trimmings to the Queen. Put them in an envelope with a note saying, We've got rid of our bush, you get rid of yours! When you have done this please send us an e-mail at: God_shave_the_queen-s@yahoogroups.com. You don't have to put your name if you don't want to, we would just like an idea of the number of women who have taken part in the action.

Among the reasons given for the protest is the observation that Women's liberation has been used as justification for the wars pursued by the Bush administration, yet women have been left exposed to high levels of violence in the countries the Bush administration has targeted and there has been no significant increase in women's rights. No significant increase in women's rights in Iraq and Afghanistan? In Iraq, people now have the right to not be tortured, and to speak out against fundie nonsense in ways not approved by the government. That's a big increase in rights for women and men.

In Afghanistan, the claim is even more ludicrous. Women are going to school, for the first time since the Taliban defeated our allies there in 1994. If that's not a big increase in women's rights, nothing is.

Evangelism, witnessing and similar activitites go by one name here—advertising, and is no different from spam for viagra, penis enlargement products and pornography. We do not take advertising. If you want to advertise your imaginary friend, please spend your own money on your own web space to do so. Any attempts to use the comments section for advertisements will be deleted, and the perpetrator barred, unless they are particularly stupid, in which case I reserve the right to pinch an idea from Teresa Nielsen Hayden and delete all the vowels.

Allowed HTML: a href, b, br, p, strong, em, ol, ul, li, blockquote, q, pre. If your name has accents in it, things will (hopefully!) work better if you use the XHTML entities for those letters. The same applies if you are using a word processor to compose your comment, then copying and pasting the text—either turn off curly quotes and avoid using em-dashes, or edit your comment after pasting to get rid of them. Garbled comments usually get deleted.
