Japan: A number of residents rang the Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory to report a UFO in the sky. And what was it? an aircraft vapor trail that had been lit up by the late afternoon sun

Observatory officials said vapor trails can suddenly be cut off due to the amount of moisture in the air, creating the appearance of a comet tail.

I've seen this phenomenon and it is very impressive and a hell of a lot brighter than you would expect. It was interesting that it was the same vapour trail I would see every morning from the same plane using the same flight path, but it needed the sun to be coming up at just the right time for it to happen. Considering the amount of air traffic around me, I've only seen it the once. Still, very cool.
