Australia: Australian Federal Liberal MP Danna Vale has decided to drum up some publicity for herself over the current kerfuffle concerning the more intelligent members of parliament attempting to remove the decisions concerning the abortion drug RU486 from the loony fundie Tony Abbott and placing it under the wing of the Therapeutic Goods Administration, the department that assesses and monitors all other drugs for use in Australia.
Danna Vale has decided that Australian women are too stupid to make decisions about their own fertility for themselves and is backing a move to keep the drug under the control of a man with his own tentative grip on reality. But dear Danna has even managed to get her fellow wingnut MPs off-side by mentioning her other concern over the drug.
I've actually read in the Daily Telegraph where a certain imam from the Lakemba mosque actually said that Australia is going to be a Muslim nation in 50 years' time, she said.
I didn't believe him at the time but when you actually look at the birthrates and you look at the fact that we are aborting ourselves almost out of existence by a 100,000 abortions every year.
You multiply that by 50 years, that's 5 million potential Australians we won't have here.
Mrs Vale says apart from the morals of the issue, she is concerned about what she says are the implications for Australia's future.
Aside from the imam in question being a loony fundie in his own right and not a reliable source of facts, Vale seems to be plucking figures out of the air. There are no reliable statistics on abortions in Australia. Some states that do have figures, also include miscarriages and still births in those figures, making them useless.
Sad to say, this silly bitch is my local member of parliament. I've actual met and spoken to the woman. As she seemed completely clueless about the drug baron who has his fortress of solitude within a kilometre of her office, has been assaulting the neighbours and is more than likely responsible for the arson at my local shops, I am not surprised that she doesn't seem to have much of a grip on any other facts that are a little further afield.
Jackie Kelly, one of Vale's co-sponsors of the amendment, has distanced herself from her colleague.
I think Danna's on her own on that one,she said.
You've got to laugh when the loony fundies are so determined to scuttle their own boat.
A couple of days later and, even with all her pollie mates pointing out that she's being a prat, Vale has refused to backdown from her stance of stupidity. Amusingly enough, Amanda Vanstone, who has something of an iffy history in being John Howard's lap dog, has mentioned that she may need to have a word in Vale's shell-like.
Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said she might have a cup of tea with Mrs Vale to explain things to her.

These are the same fundies who are obsessed with controlling everything from conception to birth, but don't want to know you after that.
The scum that assault people entering abortion clinics are the same people who will spit on teenage mothers. They will demand that all aide be removed from unmarried mothers because "they shouldn't have had the child in the first place if they couldn't afford it". Well, they wouldn't have had it if some moron hadn't terrified them into having a child they knew they could afford.
I have to wonder if the loony fundies watched Compass on Sunday. Pregnant Pause was aimed squarely at morons like Tony Abbott and painted a grim picture of what life was like for women before safe contraception and abortion was widely available in Australia.
The Bill passed.
Federal MPs in the House of representatives have voted in favour of a bill handing control over the abortion drug RU486 to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
I guess that makes this a case of rare common sense at this point.
Buried in some of the articles announcing the bill going through, was word that Vale had apologised. Vanstone must have had a word to her after all.
Wow. Apparently Vale has no concept of how populations evolve at all, outside of the rankest stereotypes. I'm impressed.

It's a pity the fundies seem to have won, with even the serious media using the emotive, and inaccurate, term "abortion drug". It prevents implantation, which happens spontaneously to most fertilised ova, so you are never even pregnant. This (Flash) animation explains all (NSFW).
There again, these are the same fundies who go on about the sanctity of life while chomping on a beef steak.
