The discovery of an elaborately carved knife has added to the confusion surrounding the burial of dogs around Silchester. A number of apparently ritual burials have been found at the Roman site. The knife depicts two dogs mating and was buried in a pit containing the bodies of two dogs. It suggests that the dog burials were going on over a longer period of time than previously thought.
