Beyond Gomorrah: America's Culture

by Red Wolf

United States: Anthony LoBaido is an evangelical fundamentalist with access to a computer and a complete lack of understanding that America and culture are mutually exclusive. He has recently taken a respite from his self imposed exile from the television to enlighten the god botherers on the filth currently being peddled on the box.

I must say that most shocking of all were the number of references on Late Night with Conan O'Brien to grown ups having (sick and evil) sexual relations with children.

In Europe it is at the door. Just go on line and check out the age of consensual sex in many European nations. In Spain it is 12! This is reality. (Where is the Pope? Where are Spanish Catholics?)

This guy is way too obssessed with juvenile sex to be safely allowed near anyone's kids.

Saturday Night Live: Heather Graham is depicted as a babysitter in a skit. She is busy graphically discussing having sex with the parents of the child she is busy sitting for. (She is a noted hater of the Church. But wow, what a total babe!)

So it's okay to dislike the fundies, as long as you're cute?

Adam Sandler goes on a top late night talk show to talk about his mother, Jewish holidays and his Hanukah gift of a battery operated anal probe. His OWN mother! Can you believe he says his mother bought him extra batteries to put in his anus. This was is Hanukah present. What does Yahweh think?

Men everywhere are wearing earrings, even though the Old Testament CLEARLY states they are only for slaves. This is a blurring of gender roles, among many. (Somehow the earrings go with tattoos and body piercings.) Will these people one day take a special mark on their hands in a cashless society?

I think you get the drift, dear little Anthony blathers on endlessly about the evils of pop culture. He spends so much of his time dithering between ranting and trying to be politically correct to make you wonder what his blood pressure is like.

Aside from his unhealthy fascination with children, he's also of the belief that all homosexuals are paedophiles, obviously forgetting that the kiddy fiddlers tend to be that nice man next door who goes to church regularly and always helps out in the community.

If nothing else he does manage to offer proof that fundies have a had compulsory humourectomy and Americans have no grasp on satire. And Anthony's professed love for Margaret Thatcher should be grounds for him being repeatedly poked with pointy sticks by all and sundry that he has offended.

There are 250 million Americans. Some of us are cultured; some of us have a grasp of satire.

I'll probably always be wondering how people find the Prattle, and while it's always nice to get comments, especially when you manage to prod someone out of their comfort zone with a pointy stick, I'll never understand why anyone would bother to comment on an article that they haven't fucking read.

The point of the post was not the blindingly obvious sarcasm of the Prattle commentator, which seemed to bypassed your humour filter, but the hideously bigoted wanker who is happily roaming around spouting his fundie drivel to a salivating hoard of braindead worshippers. Instead of commenting on said wanker, you instead highlight the commentary, thus proving that Americans seem to be missing a humour gene.

With very few exceptions does American humour rise above the pre-school level of swearing and poo jokes. And if you are lucky enough to find a funny American comic, it's no surprise to find out they actually come from Canada. The only funny American that comes to mind immediately is Bill Hicks, and he's dead.

As for culture, it is not homogenised pop from little Britney and her clone army of bimbos, or nor is it Springsteen, who may go over big in New Jersey, but is a non-event in the rest of the world. Neither is it the mind-numbing drivel of movies and television that are continuously forced on the rest of the world. Although with a corporate run media, I'm sure most Americans think otherwise. And I won't even mention the number of Americans who think Spinal Tap and The Onion are real.

In response to an accusation of bigotry against Americans, you let fly with more insults against Americans. Very convincing. And yes, I did read the entire fucking comment.

And yet that much vaunted sarcasm detector is still brunk.

Other nationalities take great delight in laughing at themselves, take the documentaries Cane Toads and Americana, for example. Americans have a tendency to miss the humour and see the joke through their hey, you're picking on me filter.

This would go a long way to explaining the proliferation of telly evangelicals who are more than willing to part the gullible from their money for the promise of a get out of hell free card. All you need to do is wave a flag, spout some patriotic nonsense and people will beat a path to your door with a chequebook in hand. Which is why old L Ron got into the create your own religion game in the first place, there's a sucker born every minute and they're not going to get that you're laughing all the way to bank.

Obviously, you are bigoted against Americans. Post this on the internet, and every once in a while an American is going to call you on this. We invented the damn thing, after all. (You're welcome.)

Ah, the old anti-semitism defence. Any comment against something, regardless of accuracy, is taken to be an insult of the highest order because the person viewing the infraction has no real comeback. Sounds like Dubya's "You're either with us or against us" waffle. The world is not black and white, they've invented this amazing new colour called grey.

Americans do some amazing stuff, however, humour rarely falls into that camp, as your repeated lack of clue has so admirably proven.

Feel free to take your bat and ball, and go home in a sulk. And while you're there, have a chat to Al Gore, the inventor of the internet.

But none of what you have posted in this thread is actually funny, unless you regard insulting Americans as funny in itself (anyone who regards Al Gore invented the internet jokes as funny in 2003 should not be pontificating on other people's lack of humor).

I will allow you the last word in this increasingly tedious thread.

It seems that Bill has yet again failed to grasp the tricky subject of humour in forgeting that the example of Al Gore inventing the Internet was a poor attempt at humour by his fellow citizens.

Wax lyrical
