Saskatoon accused win case

by Feòrag

Canada: Twelve people who were accused of ritually abusing children in the late eighties have won a civil suit against three of the people responsible. The judge agreed that they were the victims of a malicious prosecution.

The case started at the height of the satanic abuse panic and bears all the hallmarks of that period:

Richard Klassen and 11 others were accused more than 12 years ago of ritualistically abusing foster kids - forcing them to eat eyeballs, drink blood, participate in orgies and watch newborn babies get skinned and buried...
...Terry Hinz, a former Crown prosecutor, told court he asked [Saskatoon police Supt. Brian] Dueck to track down the babies who were killed. Dueck told him the killers were brood mares - women who breed children specifically to sacrifice them.

Dueck testified that he had been following a widely recognized protocol to believe that children are being honest when they disclose information about sexual abuse. The children, now in their mid-twenties have publically admitted that they made up the stories. Accused were victims in abuse case, judge rules - Toronto Star, 30th December 2003.

I only found a tangental mention of repressed memory therapy being involved in the original case, but it bears all the hallmarks of that particular bogus science. Did find a site run by the guys who just got their names cleared: Injustice Busters

The 'recovered memory' nonsense came later, from the nineties onwards. This case is from the period when kids were asked leading questions by gullible social workers who had attended fundie-led conferences and received copies of their dossier. The social workers were chanting the mantra believe the children, who had only given the answer they thought was expected based on the questioning.

Often the only 'crime' the family had committed was to be poor and so failing to give their children the luxurious middle-class lifestyle the social workers thought they ought to have. This was a major finding of Professor Jean La Fontaine's report on the English cases.
