Scotland: Churchgoers have officially objected to The Edinburgh Dungeon having its entertainment licence renewed on the grounds that many of its displays are offensive to Christians.
But it is not so much the severed heads or piles of corpses the congregation of the city's London Road Church has objected to — it is theSatan's Grotto.
The kirk session of the church has complained about elves impaled on spikes, roasting robins and Father Christmas boiling in a witch's cauldron. Also under fire is children being asked whether they had been bad rather than good, offerednasty presentsinstead of sweets and invited to take part in ayucky dip.
The Christians claim the associations with evil are at least corrupting and at worst something that could lead to devil worship.
What is it with some groups of Christians and their obsession with Satanism? Apparently it's bad to have a sense of humour and a grasp of the ridiculous. It all seems a bit silly coming from a group who glorify in the torture of a bloke.
A recent local filler piece on the evening news reported several instances of petty theft through Sydney churches. This isn't new and has gone on forever, but that doesn't make for a good scare-mongering, so the story was taken a sign of the coming apocalypse. Most of the church leaders spoken to were upset but pragmatic about the thefts, but the loony Catholic from Parramatta declared the theft of candles and linen to be a sure sign of satan worship.
Perhaps there's something in the wine.

Cause they got nothing better to do? So they go out and find Satan pretty much anywhere they can...

Well, Satanism is a Christian heresy, because Satan is a Christian construct. If you don't believe in him you can't very well worship him.
I like the sound of that grotto, though. Wonder if the London dungeon will have one this year.

This church is very close to my house (it might even be the nearest!), so I think I might pop out and get a photo to illustrate the article.

Now that I've added a picture of the church in question, you can see that they're having a little bit of work done on their rather nice Gothic Revival building. Of course, it would be unkind of me to observe that they've brought this matter up at a time when town is full of visitors, some of whom might be gullible American Christians willing to part with some cash in the general direction of a suitably loony church.

The scaffolding made me think the same thing. it seems there's no such thing as bad publicity or does that only apply to Paris Hilton?

I wonder if these fundies ever stopped to think that Satan gets way more mileage and publicity from THEM than any pagan group going.
