Bargain of the Day: Holy water

It seems there are a number of companies taking advantage of people gullible enough to buy tap water packaged in religious bottles:

Inspired, perhaps, by vitamin and energy waters, a number of new companies have begun making more explicit claims: their water doesn't just promote good health, it actually makes you good. Holy Drinking Water, produced by a California-based company called Wayne Enterprises, is blessed in the warehouse by an Anglican or Roman Catholic priest (after a thorough background check). Like a crucifix or a rosary, a bottle of Holy Drinking Water is a daily reminder to be kind to others, says Brian Germann, Wayne's CEO. Another company makes Liquid OM, superpurified bottled water containing vibrations that promote a positive outlook. Invented by Kenny Mazursky, a sound therapist in Chicago, the water purportedly possesses an energy field that Mazursky makes by striking a giant gong and Tibetan bowls in its vicinity. He says the good energy can be felt not just after you drink the water but before, when you're holding the bottle.

The most recent entry in this niche is Spiritual Water. It's purified municipal water, sold with 10 different Christian labels. The Virgin Mary bottle, for example, has the Hail Mary prayer printed on the back in English and Spanish. Spiritual Water helps people to stay focused, believe in yourself and believe in God, says Elicko Taieb, the Florida-based company's founder who was formerly in the pest-control business. All three companies give a portion of their profits to charity.

Bless This Bottled WaterNewsweek, 17th December 2007 (thanks, Novice Nun the Wiser OPI).

Bargain of the Day: Falwell tat

He's been dead for less than a day, and already eBay is flooded with Jerry Falwell related memorabilia. Much of it is just stuff like signed books, but some of it is interesting. Carat Queen was impressively quick off the mark in producing this Jerry Falwell Memorial tribute magnet

The wags were quick to respond to his demise too. For example, you can buy One Pound of Lard. Own a Portion of Jerry Falwell ! (Not his ubiquitous lard, but rather lard JUST LIKE HIS!):

Up for auction is one pound of lard - exactly like the lard which composed Jerry Falwell. Place this tub of lard high on a shelf or on your mantle, should you need a tub of lard to look-up to. Place this lard on the back of a donkey or pig should you need a tub of lard to mindlessly follow.

The perfect keepsake with which to remember him.

Or how about a nice painting in his memory? Perhaps JERRY FALWELL IN HELL - acrylic painting! with Satan! fits the bill?

This is your chance to own what is probably the first contemporary art painting of religious-right extremist JERRY FALWELL to be done following his death earlier today (May 15th). This is also a very rare chance to purchase Jeffrey Scott Holland (me)'s primitive neo-expressionist artwork at such a low price on eBay, thanks to the good people at Superfrothco.

The painting isn't pictured here because I'm working on it right now, even as we speak.

It's acrylic on bristol and measures 8.5x11. It will portray Rev. Falwell arriving in Hell, surrounded by flames, and coming face to face with Satan, who's laughing hysterically, not unlike the way he often does in a Jack Chick comic.

A close shave

Malawi: A witchdoctor's unconventional magic has resulted in a two year prison sentence, with hard labour.

People in Mulanje were going about their daily businesses but for two women and a 13-year-old girl all from the same family it was a morning of lifetime experiences. The three were having their pubic hair shaved with razor blades by a self proclaimed male witchdoctor who promised them the fortune of life.

One by one the three sisters were called into a bathroom a few metres away from their main house where they stripped naked before 21 year old Peter Harawara who sat there touching and shaving their private parts.

The women began to suspect something was amiss when he threatened them with death and demanded sex.

Religious spam: the motherlode

Crazy Christian Chain Emails is a blog which does exactly what it says on the can. An introductory post explains:

Welcome to Crazy Christian Chain Emails, a site dedicated to, well, see the name. I've devised a kind of scoring system, in which points are given for different common rhetorical and stylistic cliches in these emails.... Should I introduce myself? Okay, my name is Stella; I'm an atheist, and I live in Kansas. Since I'm in the Bible Belt, most of my friends and acquaintances are Christian. This usually doesn't affect my life too much, unless I'm on these people's email contact lists. Then I have to put up with True stories of angels emails. I'm tired of it, and rather than ask my friends not to send me any more of that garbage, I'll put the messages up on the internet for other people to laugh at. I'm passive-aggressive that way.

It all makes me so glad that I have Thunderbird set to not display HTML messages.

Bargain of the Day: God up your bum

Sometimes I will encounter something of interest while browsing a totally unrelated site. Today was one of those days. How could I possibly expect that innocently reading Pharynugla's commentary on Gillian McKeith, could possibly lead to a Christ-centered, health education ministry offering wholeness of body, mind and spirit?

It all started with a comment by Zeno: You may have years of "unexpressed" meals in your digestive tract, but never fear! Vierra will give you a Christian colonic.. My ears pricked up, naturally, and there was a link: Garbage in, garbage out!. And so, eventually, with the help of a well-known search engine, I found my man.

Welcome to Modern Manna online, the official website for Danny Vierra—founder of the Almighty Cleanse. We are a Christ-centered, health education ministry offering wholeness of body, mind and spirit. We offer a 10-day live-in program at BellaVita Lifestyle Center. We also offer the building blocks for excellent health, the latest information from articles, books, audios and DVDs for simple, alternative health remedies, which include lifestyle changes, vegetarian cooking, detoxifying and cleansing, juicing and more...

Optimal health starts with a seasonal cleanse. Almighty Cleanse™ is a powerful yet gentle 2-part system to help regulate and purify your digestive tract. This easy-to-use cleansing system helps expel impurities and fecal matter that build-up on your intestinal walls. One of the most concentrated natural purification systems available, Almighty Cleanse can work in only 7 days.

Yes, Almighty Cleanse. It's really called that. Once your digestive system has been dosed in this holy water, Modern Manna can help you keep it sparkly with herbal concoctions, including Anti-Plague Formula.

The recipes look pretty good, though. There again, you can say that about Gillian McKeith.

Sunday miscelleny

A handful of stories from the last few days which I was too lazy to write about at the time:

  • Teachers get advice on how to spot signs of ritual abuseThe Guardian, 2nd February 2007. Note the word being repurposed to mean the abuse of children by Christians who believe the child to be possessed or a witch. Many of the signs are a bit crap, and others would apply to more mundane forms of child abuse too.

  • Brought to book: the poo lady's PhDThe Guardian, 3rd February 2007. Ben Goldacre find Gillian McKeith's PhD thesis:
There are lots of grand statements about research, with nice superscript numbers relating to references in the back. But when you chase to the back of the book to see what these academic documents are, they include such august periodicals as Delicious, Creative Living, Healthy Eating, and my favourite: Spiritual Nutrition and the Rainbow Diet.

Some of it is plainly absurd. As we get older, she explains, the levels of RNA/DNA decrease. Okay. If you do not have enough RNA/DNA, she goes on, you may ultimately age prematurely. Stress can deplete your DNA, but algae will increase it. And that's not all. Chlorophyll within the algae is a powerful oxygen generator for human beings. Back to GCSE Biology: it'll only make oxygen if there's light inside me, Gillian ...
I found You are What you Eat frustrating and full of errors—it cited the safe drinking levels which were revised upwards in the early 1990s, for example. There are some good recipes in there, but often they are made needlessly complicated, and use exotic ingredients which would put it out of the price range of mere mortals.

  • New Conspiracy: Israeli Genocide Against Lebanese — With Poison BalloonsThe MEMRI Blog, 1st February 2007. This sort of panic is well recorded, and has a long history. There are examples of similar panics during the First World War, but this one seems to have the added legs of organisations willing to exploit it for political reasons.

  • An indictment that the liberal left is oblivious toThe Guardian, 3rd February 2007, isn't on the web site, presumably due to intense embarrassment about the ungrammatical title. Oliver Kamm alleges that a mysteriously monolithic liberal left puts the rights of religious organisations over that of the individuals they oppress:
In the past century, material betterment and the steady diminuation of discrimination advanced progressive goals. Much of the left have [grr...—F.] yet to come to terms with this achievement. At the extreme, some who were once on the left have adopted the language and outlook of the right. They argue for what by any objective standards are reactionary positions. These include promotion of religious obscurantism in place of secularism; segregation of the sexes at public events; abridgement of free speech in deference to the sensibilities of those who claim themselves victims of Islamophobia; and, most pernicious, the resurrection in political debate of some highly traditional motifs of anti-semitic conspiracy theory.
If you can get yourself to the library, it's on page 31.

  • Tolerating intolerance is still this country's besetting sinThe Guardian (Comment Is Free), 4th February 2007. More comment on a related matter to the above.

  • Muslims are now getting the same treatment Jews had a century agoThe Guardian (Comment Is Free), 2nd February 2007. One major difference, which is mentioned, but not dwelled upon, is that 19th century radicals-who-happened-to-be-Jewish were not fighting to impose Judaism on the populace as a whole, nor were they the ones wearing traditional Jewish dress as they had pretty much rejected religion. The tiny minority of violent Islamist fundamentalists claim to be fighting for their faith.

Bargain of the Day: Papal ball

Today's bargain is a golf ball, but it's no ordinary golf ball—it's a special HOLE IN ONE BALL - Pope Benedikt XVI

A golf ball, with tenuous Papal connectionOn 19 APRIL 2005 I have at hole 5 in my homeland club WENDELINUS GOLFPARK in SANKT WENDEL with this ball (Titleist 1) a HOLE IN ONE on my private round played. This course is only 116m long, one stands somewhat above the green and has a beautiful view of the offshore water hazard (see picture).

I experienced only later that at the Pope Benedikt XVI. (civil Joseph Alois Ratzinger) was selected on this day (19 APRIL 2005) to the successor by Johannes Paul II.

I still might mention that me in APRIL (at the 11th) Birthday has just like Joseph Alois Ratzinger who was born on APRIL 16th.

Spares a little crazy the whole!?

I am not strictly religious, but me whole history already to thinking brought.

The vendor is not a native English speaker, so for once I'm not going to take the piss out of the language.

Gullibility, greed and the US legal system.

United States: When both Charlie and Red Wolf draw my attention to a story, you know it must be good, and this one is a cracker.

A televangelist is being sued by her own family because her brother died of cancer after he decided to rely on his imaginary friend rather than medicine for a cure.

Darlene Bishop has published a book, Your Life Follows Your Words, in which she claims that she had been cured of breast cancer through prayer, and that her brother, Darrell "Wayne" Perry, had been healed of throat cancer using the same method. Perry died of the disease about 18 months ago. The book was published at a time when Perry's cancer had been in remission for over a year, although it is still on sale.

His children, Bryan, Justin, Olivia and Christian, have issued a lawsuit for wrongful death against Mrs Bishop because they claim she persuaded Perry to stop chemotherapy and rely instead on God's healing. They contend in legal depositions that at the moment Mrs Bishop and her brother were touring the country preaching about the miracle of his recovery, they were both aware that he had been advised by doctors that his illness was terminal.

Bishop denies the allegation and wrote in her blog (December 9th entry - permalinks are obviously far too complicated):

They are claming that I talked my brother Wayne out of going to the doctor when he learned of his throat cancer. I would NEVER EVER EVER tell someone to not go to the doctor. As a matter of fact I encouraged him to listen to the doctors, but he refused surgery saying he would rather die than have his voice box removed.

Presumably the family do not consider it likely that a 55-year-old religious man actually has a mind of his own.

Evangelist sued for claiming that God healsThe Independent, 2nd January 2007; Tele-evangelist sued over 'God can heal' claimThe Guardian, 2nd January 2007.

Bargain of the Day: Rider-Waite Tarot

Bargains have been thin on the ground lately, but today you can bid on a Rider-Waite tarot pack. What? Not weird enough for you? But these cards are special because it's a Tarot Card Deck From Dead Salem Mass Witch.

Possessed Or Bad Karma? We Will Let You Decide

Hello, And welcome to another auction brought to you by Power Mix Fm

After our listeners have heard that we were running some crazy ebay auctions we recieved a phone call from cindy in Salem Mass. and her phone conversation gave myself and the producers all chills up our spines, for that reason we are going to tell you her story and the reason why we are selling these cards for her.

It was 2 weeks befor Halloween when she stumbled upon a yard sale next to an old witch cemetary, she sensed that something on the table was eager for her to buy as she walked closer to the table a deck of Tarot cards fell onto of her foot the lady running the sale snickered in the background and approached her and asked if she needed help and out of the blue cindy said ill take these.

after the transaction the lady told her that these cards belonged to her daughter that was evolved in witch craft for 5 years but died by a freak accident in her apartment as cindy gulped and was just about to change her mind, her cell phone ringed and she had to leae fast.

Later that night cindy arrived home and tried to play with the cards but could not figure it out.

Night 1: about 2am cindy woke up to a loud scream of a female screaming for help and then as the girls tone got louder she could hear a man in a language that almost sounded german as cindy put it, She quickly went to the couch and slept there for the night.

Night 6: same time around 2am cindy heard the same as befor and once again slept on the couch,

and this would happen every 5 days, since then cindy has moved and had the tarot cards stored in a storage facility.

Untill today Power Mix FM has taken the cards for cindy and we are listing them here on ebay for hopes that someone in this world may know how to handle this type of deal.

Or maybe you are just a collector of ghostly objects and this would help with your collection.

Power Mix Fm has no way to verify this story besides what cindy has told us but we will keep the Deck of cards on the studio desk so during our 2AM dj sessions we will see if our DJ's experience the same scenario as cindy did.

All questions may take upto 24 hours to respond as we will forward them to cindy's home email address.

Spam du Jour: Saturday published Jews

It's a well-known spamming technique - try to get past Bayesian filters by putting in random text. Well, every day I skim through my spam trap folder where my Bayesian filter puts everything it thinks is spam, just in case there are any false positives (and to look for religious ones). Well, the technique didn't work as I found a really bizarre message in there. The spammer had used some sort of travesty generator to produce the bogus text, but he must have primed it with some very interesting material indeed. The result, well at first I thought it was QuePirate back to tell us of his latest discoveries. The non-functioning attachment, entitled Christian.gif, merely enhanced that impression

Post-Rapture Post

United States: While most people are pondering ways to repel the annoyingly over righteous from their doorsteps at the crack of dawn, a couple of lads from Idaho saw an opportunity in taking advantage of the superstitions of others.

Noticing that the wacky American fairy tale of the Rapture was getting wide notice from many unthinking cult members, they decided to set up a service called Post-Rapture Post that allows the gullible to pay a fee to have a personal I told you so letter hand-delivered to their non-cult member friends and family who have been left behind.

Just write your letter and it will be hand-delivered immediately following the exodus of the pure from the Earth. But you must be thinking to yourself, How can the letters be delivered after the Rapture? The answer is simple. The creators of this site are Atheists. That's right, we don't believe in God. How else would we be able to deliver your correspondence after the Rapture?

Pure genius.

Religious? Unhappy? www.prattle.net

United States: A religious organisation which makes the ridiculous claim that it is possible to convert from homosexuality to heterosexuality is upset that people naturally take the piss out of them. So terrified were Exodus International that the Liberty Counsel sent blogger Justin Watt a cease-and-desist letter asking him to remove an image parodying the organisation's snake oil advertisements.

Fortunately, the ACLU is on Watt's side, along with their lawyers, who argue that the parody image is constitutionally-protected free speech, and fair use.

[Straight? Unhappy? www.gay.com]The moment I saw the billboards last September, I was deeply offended. The inspiration for the parody I created came to me instantly. How would straight people feel if their very being, their sense of self was being so overtly disparaged? said Justin Watt, a blogger from Santa Rosa, California. Their response was to try to intimidate me into taking the image down. It’s troubling that an organization as big as Exodus would go to such great lengths to silence its critics.

The billboard, sponsored by ex-gay ministry Exodus International, read, Gay? Unhappy? www.exodus.to. After seeing a photo of the billboards online, Watt posted an altered version reading, Straight? Unhappy? www.gay.com on his website, Justinsomnia.org. Liberty Counsel, an anti-gay legal group representing Exodus, sent Watt a cease-and-desist letter earlier this month claiming the parody violated Exodus’s intellectual property rights and threatening legal action if the parodies were not removed. In a response sent today to Liberty Counsel, the ACLU’s cooperating attorney, Laurence Pulgram of Fenwick & West, LLP, called upon Exodus to drop its attempts to censor Watt, pointing to case law holding parodies to be Constitutionally protected speech.

Parodies like Justin’s are protected by the First Amendment as a form of political commentary. His point was to make a comment on a very important issue he has strongly held beliefs about: that Exodus’s tactics are wrong, that there’s nothing wrong with being gay, and that being gay doesn’t make you unhappy, said Ann Brick, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Northern California. Just as a group like Exodus has a Constitutionally protected right to say whatever it wants to about gay people, even when that view has been roundly condemned by every major psychological and medical organization, Justin has a right to use parody to voice his opposition.

Bargain of the Day: Christian simulacra

Today's must-have bargains are more examples of over-active imaginations at work. First up is JESUS FACE ON A LOG christian bible catholic religious. We are urged PLEASE HELP HIT THE PULSE " CLICK WATCH IT NOW".

This is the way i found it in the desert. This log is not touched painted or anthing like that i cant believe it. And my kid said ask God. 10 second lateri was picking up a log with JESUS on it

Im not a very religious person, But my kid is. The prayer was answered and the log needs a new home. If your prayer is answered pass it on after.

Bid a penny at a time. I promise this is real and not like some piece of toast with the big man grilled into it

A little more expensive are these Images Of Mother Mary & Christ. They are presumably not of interest to fundies, as this pair of masterpieces was apparently created 210,000,000 years ago.

Nigeria: Today's attempt at extracting money from the religiously-impaired is unusual, with Muslims being the intended victims. Why the scammer should think that My Arab Gentleman is an appropriate form of address to someone with a Gaelic name is left as an exercise for the student of scamology.

Assallamu allaikum

My name is Fernandez Ramon i am a business man from south america living in Netherlands, untill recently i was the business partner of an arab merchant from Kuwait, recently my partner died in Mecca during the hadj

Before my partner died, we recently did a business deal together in Kuwaite and the profit and turnover of the business yeailded $ ( seventeen Million United States Dollars) this money was transfered to a joint account that we openned together in a Bank here in Netherlands but due to the Hadj pilgrimage that was approaching my partner pleaded that we leave this money untill after the end of the hadj and this i agreed to.

When my partner deid at the Hadj, i was left with no choice but to look for the alternative of withdrawing the money and closing the account but the bank informed me that i have to provide a next of kin to stand as a beneficiary on behalf of my partner before i can clear this account.

What i want now is an arab gentleman with good records who can stand as a beneficiary on behalf of my late partner

Now i want to make it clear why i choose you, my partner's family are already in dispute over his properties that he left behind, and i know that if i disclose to them about this money they will also cause more problem for his family as his brothers are seizing all his belongings from his wife, my partner did not reveal to his family the nature of our business so no one knows about this money

If you are willing to co-operate with me i will share with you 60/40 when this funds is released, so let me know your opinion, and send me your Name, Age , Nationality, email address and telephone number, so that i can give you complete information on the proceedings

Please if you are not from am arab Nation do not bother to respond, the next of kin has to be Arabian.

Spam du Jour: The dubious and their relatives

Nigeria: What a day for scam messages! I've attracted the attention of the relatives of many notable people it seems, as well as the usual religious stuff. First in the spam trap was a message entitled Can you help me donate to Charity? purporting to be from Haji Abdul Rahman. Strangely, he seems to be suffering the identical problem to Harry Hakeem the other day. The notes are not identical, but his Eosophageal cancer has also defiled all forms of medical treatment. Then Mrs. Thelma Akhi found her way into the spam trap, with a religious plea, and strange interpretation of the Bible that Mrs.Angelina Ebony Lamin contacted me about last May.

But these people are nobodies, and their religious scams are mentioned only to give me an excuse to feature the others. First up, the scion of an extremely dubious character indeed:

Then, marked FOR YOUR URGENT ATTENTION was a missive allegedly from Mrs. Suha Arafat, which starts:

I am MRS. SUHA ARAFAT, the wife of late YASSER ARAFAT,the Palestinian leader who died recently in Paris. Since his death and even prior to the announcement, I have been thrown into a state of antagonism, confusion, humiliation, frustration and hopelessness by the present leadership of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the new Prime Minister. I have even been subjected to physical and psychological torture.

As a widow that is so traumatized, I have lost confidence with everybody in the country at the moment. You view this website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3965541.stm.You must have heard over the media reports and the Internet on the discovery of some fund in my husband secret bank account and companies and the allegations of some huge sums of money deposited by my husband in my name of which I have refuses to disclose or give up to the corrupt Palestine Government.

In fact the total sum allegedly discovered by the Government so far is in the tune of about $6.5 Billion Dollars. And they are not relenting on their effort to make me poor for life. As you know, the Muslem community has no regards for woman, more importantly when the woman is from a Christian background, hence my desire for a foreign assistance.

But then I heard a chortle from Charlie's study. He forwarded what he'd received:

Nigeria: Today's religious spam is interesting in that it asks me to support a dodgy Christian cult who now operate under another name. The bizarre language is fascinating too (It has defiled all forms of medical treatment), and it includes a classic trick found in many examples of this kind of scam—repeating the amount of money involved in block capitals.

From: Harry Hakeem <harry79hakeemqirr@netscape.net>

Dear Friend.

Good day and God bless you. I feel quite safe and satisfy dealing with you in this charity project.Though, this medium (Internet) has been greatly abused, I choose to reach you through it because it still remains the fastest, surest and most secured medium of communication. However, this correspondence is purely private, and it should be treated as such.

As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday. My name is MR.HARRY HAKEEM, a merchant in Dubai, in the U.A.E. I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer . It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.

I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world.

I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as a few close friends.

I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give alms to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the U.A.E, Algeria and Malaysia. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization in Bulgaria and Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them.

The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge cash deposit of TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS $12,000,000,that I have with a finance/Security Company abroad. I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatched it to charity organizations.

I have set aside 25% for you and for your time if you want to help me to collect this Funds and also invest this money.

Remain blessed in the name of the Lord.

Yours in Christ,

Mr.Harry Hakeem

From: Evang Mrs ..Monica Rogers....
Beloved In Christ,

Calvary greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I am Evangelist ..Monica Rogers..........., a widow to Late....Chief Paul Rogers....... I am 61 years old; I am now a new Christian convert, suffering from long time cancer of the breast. From all indications, my condition is really deteriorating and is quite obvious that I may not live more than six months, because the cancer stage has gotten to a very severe stage.

My late husband was killed during the Gulf war, and during the period of our marriage we had a son who was also killed in a cold blood during the Gulf war. My late husband was very wealthy and after his death, I inherited all his business and wealth. My personal physician told me that I may not live for more than six months and I am so scared about this. So, I now decided to divide part of this wealth, by contributing to the development of evangelism in Africa, America, Europe and Asian Countries.

I selected you after visiting the website for this purpose and prayed over it, I am willing to donate the sum of $6.000,000.00 Million US Dollars to the motherless baby homes, needy, poor, charity homes and widows too. Please note that, this fund is lying with the Central Bank of Nigeria therefore my lawyer will file an immediate application for the transfer of the money in the name of your ministry. Please, do not reply me if you have the intention of using this fund for personal use other than enhancement of evangelism.

Lastly, I want you to be praying for me as regards my entire life and my health because I have come to find out since my spiritual birth lately that wealth acquisition without Jesus Christ in one's life is vanity upon vanity. If you have to die says the Lord, keep fit and I will give you the crown of life. May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the sweet fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. I await your urgent reply.

Yours in Christ

Evangelist ...Monica Rogers.........

The phrase calvary greetings is an odd one, which I've only ever encountered in an earlier scam message.

Spam du Jour: IN GOOD FAITH

Nigeria: Today's religious spam claims to be from a Roda Williams, who is pretending to be in Kenya, and using a forged Italian address.

From: roda_williams@virgilio.it

I'm in a hospital in Kenya where I have been undergoing treatment for esophageal cancer. I have since lost my ability to talk and my doctors have told me that I have only a few weeks to live. It is my last wish to see this money distributed to charity organizations any where in the World. Because relatives and friends have plundered so much of my wealth since my illness, I cannot live with the agony of entrusting this huge responsibility to any of them. Please, I beg you in the name of God to help me Stand and collect the Funds from the Bank.

I want a
person that is God fearing that will use this money to fund churches, orphanages and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace. I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my soundless voice and presence of my husband's relatives around me always. I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible.

Please reply to my personal mail:

Yours in Christ,
Roda Williams.

Spam du Jour: Dear beloved in Christ ,

Nigeria: It's been a while since I last got a religiously inspired 419 scam e-mail. This one is quite good:

Subject: Dear beloved in Christ ,
From: John Bongo <barr_johnbongo@hotmail.com>
Reply-To: barr_john_bongo@fastermail.com

EMAIL: barr_john_bongo@fastermail.com

Dear beloved in Christ ,

It is by the grace of God that I received Christ, knowing the truth and the truth have set me free. Having known the truth, I had no choice than to do what is lawful and right in the sight of God for eternal life and in the sight of man for witness of God’s mercy and glory upon my life. I have the pleasure to share my testimony with you, having seen your contact during my research for a God fearing person.

I am BARRISTER JOHN BONGO, the legal adviser to late Mr. and Mrs. Bright williams, a British couple that lived in my Country Nigeria for 25 years before they both died in a plane crash late last year. These couple was good Christians, they were so dedicated to God but they had no child till they died. Throughout their stay in my country, they acquired a lot of properties like lands, house properties, est.’s their legal adviser, before their death, the husband Mr. Bright Williams instructed me to write his WILL.

Because they had no child, they dedicated their wealth to God. According to the WILL, the properties have to be sold and the money be given out to a ministry for the work of God. As their legal adviser, all the documents for the properties were in my care. He gave me the authority to sell the properties and give out the fund to the Ministries for the work of God.

To cut the story short, I sold all the properties after their death, as instructed by my client,Mr. Bright Williams before his death.

And as matter of fact, after I sold all their properties, expectedly, I realized a huge amount of money that runs into millions of dollars, and what supposed to be the percentage interest of my right legal fee was firstly deducted by me out of the total amount realized from the sold properties, this was based on the initial agreement between me and the owner of the properties before his death. Therefore, the total amount left to be invested into God's work as instructed by the owner is $12,000,000.00 (twelve million US dollars) only.

But Instead of giving the main fund out for the work of God as instructed to me by my client before his death. I converted the fund to myself with the intention of investing the fund abroad for my personal use. I was afraid of putting the fund in the Bank, because I have to give account to the bank on how got the money. I then packaged the fund in consignments and deposited the consignments with a security company.

I did not want the management of the Security Company to know the content of the consignments; therefore I registered the content of the consignments as Gold Bars. Now, the security company believes that what I deposited with them was Gold Bars.
I had encounter with Christ when Pastor Benny Hinn was preaching on television concerning Ananias and Saphira in Acts 5:1-11. After hearing the word of God, I gave my life to Christ and became a born again Christian. As a born again Christian, I started reading my bible and one day, the Lord opened my eyes to Ezekiel 33: 18 and 19. From the scripture, Discovered that the only way I could have peace in my life is to do that is lawful and right by giving out the fund as instructed for the work of God by my client.

I have asked God for forgiveness on my initial thought concerning the money, and I know that God have forgiven me. But I have to do what is lawful and right in the sight of God by giving out the fund to the chosen ministry for the purpose of God's work as instructed by my client before his death. After my fasting and prayers, I asked God to make his choice and direct me to a honest Christian or the chosen ministry that deserves this fund by his Grace.

I then came across your address on the Internet as I was browsing through a Christian site, and as a matter of fact, it is not only you or your ministry that I picked on the Christian site initially, but after my fervent prayer over it, then you were nominated through divine revelation from God so that was how I received such a divine revelation from the Lord, how I got your contact information, and I then decided to contact you for the fund to be used wisely for things that will glorify the name of God.

I have notified the Security Company where I deposited the consignments that contained the fund, that I am moving the consignment abroad and the security company has since been waiting for my authority for the consignment to leave my country and be moved abroad. So if you know that you will use this fund honestly and wisely for things that will glorify God's name, then do contact me back, ASAP.

This information’s are required by the security company to facilitate the process of the funds receiver's documentation your prompt response will be highly appreciated in my private Telephone number below.

God bless you.
Yours in Christ.

This money is currently in a vault with a finance company in EUROPE. If you will promise me that you will use this money to achieve the wish of my husband and me,then I will instruct the bank to release the content of the vault in your name. for us to discuss so that you can go and claim this money before i die.

You know, I'd heard that educational standards in the UK had dropped, but I hadn't realised it'd got this bad. Not only can she not use the English language to save her life, but appears not to know that all she has to do is write her will leaving it all to the humanitarian cause of her choice. Sheesh.

Spam du Jour: GOD BLESS YOU

Nigeria: Today's missive comes from a tranny by the name of Mrs. Stella Castillo Taborda, or 'Ahmed', according to 'her' e-mail adderess.

Hello My Dear,

Please forgive my indignation if this message comes to you as a surprise I got your contact from a database found in internet while searching for a reliable and honest person that will assist us receive a fund into an account. I was divinely inspired to pick your name among other names found in the Internet database. After series of prayers and fasting for Gods direction. I am Mrs. Stella Castillo Taborda a citizen of Colombia undergoing currently medical treatment. I am married to Dr. Castillo Taborda who worked with the Malaysia Embassy in South Africa for nine years before he died in the year 2000. We have an only child presently residing in the Netherlands, he can confirm my story. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of $18.3 Million (Eighteen Million Three Hundred Thousand U.S.Dollars) with a finance/security company in EUROPE. The money is inside one trunk box, but nobody knew that the box contained money apart from me and my late husband, the box was deposited as Photographic Materials. Presently, this money is still with the Security Company. This is purely for confidential and security reasons recently, my Doctor told me that I would not live for the next three months due to my cancer problem. Though what disturbs me most is my disability to move around which is partial paralysis. Having known my condition I decided to donate part of this fund to a church or a mosque or better still a Christian or a Moslem individual that will utilize this money for charity works. I want a church or Mosque or the individual beneficiary that will inherit this to use it for churches or Mosque orphanages and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is beautified. My child would have handled this but he is not to be trusted and would not use it for the purpose I want it used but he will be entitled to 30% of this money after claiming it. They said blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don't want my husband's hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I do not want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner, hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death because I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of my Savior. If you feel you are worthy enough to make yourself available in this project, let me know immediately you read my mail. GOD will surely provide for you the power and strength to accomplish this. All things work together for good for those who love GOD. Waiting for your urgent response. I do not need any telephone conversation in this regard because of my health, and because of the presence of my husband?s relatives who are always around me. I do not want them to know about this development. On your response I will send all relevant documents pertaining to this deposit to enable you travel and make this claim. You can reach me on this other Email:stellacasto@netscape.net.

Thank you and God bless. Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Stella Castillo Taborda

Spam du jour: Please give me your time for this branch of Prophecy - your answer is valued

Today's missive caught in the spam filter is not the usual plea from Nigeria. Indeed, T. Manaa seeks to rip people off through completely different means:

Spam du jour

Nigeria (metaphorically, at least): Today the spam trap caught the following religiously inspired missive:

Subject: "MY GOOD WILL"
From: LINDAMOHAMED@terra.es
Reply-To: LINDAMOHAMED@terra.es
Date: 23/9/05 15:15

Good day and God bless,

Greetings to you in the name of God Almighty. I am former Mrs. Memunat Mohamed Galal, now I am Mrs. Linda Mohamed Galal a widow to Late Dr. Mohamed Galal.

I am an old woman; suffering from cancer. From all indications, my condition is really deteriorating and is quite obvious that I may not live long, because the cancer stage has gotten to a very severe stage. My late husband died in an air crash on the 31st October 1999 in an Egyptian airline Boeing 990 with other passengers on board. You can confirm this fact from the website which was aired by the BBC WORLD NEWS:(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/502503.stm) and my only daughter died in BOMB ATTACK LONDON.

My late husband was very wealthy and after his death, I inherited all his business and wealth. My personal physician told me that I may not live for so long and I am so scared about this. So, I now decided to divide part of this wealth, by contributing to the well being of less privileged people and handicapped in the society of world America, Canada, Africa, Europe and Asian Countries.

This mission, who will no doubt be tasking had made me to recently relocate to Africa where I live presently. I selected you for this Purpose and prayed over it, I am willing to donate the sum of $7,300,000.00 Million US Dollars to you for the development of the well being of handicapped in the society and also as aids for the less privileged around your country, and i have map out $1,700.000.00 for your own personal use to help me for this work.

Spam of the Day

David Ellis was a bad man. He did bad things, but earned lots of money from those bad things. But then he got sick, defiled allforms of medical treatment, saw god and decided to share his wealth with the gullible.

From: david_ellis_5@sify.com

My name is DAVID ELLIS, a nationality of United Kingdom, I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. It has defiled allforms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.I have notparticularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my business.

Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended familymembers as well as a few close friends. I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give alms to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth.

So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the U.A.E, Somalia and Malaysia.

The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge cash deposit of Twenty Eight Million USD that I have with a finance/Security Company abroad. I will want you to help me collect this deposit and despatch it to charity organizations.

I have set aside 20% for you and for your time.

God be with you.

David claims to be from the UK, his email account is based in India and he mentions a rather diverse group of countries he claims to have either donated to or been ripped off by. I have to wonder if Mr Ellis would be interested in joining the Church of the Red Breast.

Nigeria: My spam filter doesn't delete spam immediately, but holds it in a special folder for me, so that I can scan it for false positives. Sometimes the subject line tells me that a particular message is spam, but that I really want to read it anyway. Such a message was MY VISSION FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

No.35 Johnson street,

Dear in Christ,

There is joy in my heart that I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal Saviour, now I am born again.Having received Christ,I also found out that it is a great priviledge to be a financial pillar in the Kingdom of God.Even though I was in the world or acquired my wealth when I was in the world but I have known the truth and the truth have set me free. Now that I am in christ and christ is in me,old things are past away and all things become new.

During my prayers and deliverance moment, the Lord ministered to me to purify my wealth and give it out to a ministry for the expansion of the Kingdom of God for his name to be glorified.I am in search of a faithful and dedicated christain or ministry with great urge to work for God with my wealth.

It is very difficult to work for God faithfully and honestly mostly when it involves money because the love of money is the root of all evil.Do not be carried away,I will like you to pray over it before responding to me.

When I receive your response,I will tell my testimony,I will tell you more about myself,I will tell you about the fund and how you are going to receive it.for security reasons my alternetive email address is (michael_2005@eresmas.com) If you find yourself worthy to utilise the fund, let me have your full names, address and your telephone numbers.

May God bless you as I await your response.

Brother Michael Okechi.

I've made the e-mail address live, in case any barking mad fundie ministries would like to take advantage of this most excellent offer.

Pass the rolling pin.

P.Z. Myers gets better evangelical spam than I do. He's got a plug for a book aimed at Christian men who fear that their dithering while waiting for a word from their imaginary friend makes them effeminate. Solution? Start treating women like shit.

Today's religious spam

The delightful Red Wolf has been looking after the Prattle while I've been living it up in Toronto, and keeping the comment spammers at bay. She doesn't have powers of spam-nuking over my inbox though, so she didn't get to see the following bizarre (and over-familiar) religious Nigerian spam, which I present with my own annotations:

Today's weird spam

419 scammers seem to have realised that adults with imaginary friends are more likely to be gullible than the rest of us, as this spam purporting to be from a David Arnold (and written in the finest Christian English) demonstrates:

Spam Gets Religion

United States: If you've noticed a hike in the amount of religious spam in your inbox lately, there's a reason, the scum are exploiting a US loophole that exempts religious groups from bulk e-mail laws.

The growth area in unsolicited e-mail is now messages that contain religious themes. And the bad news is that unlike commercial spam, it's not illegal.

E-mail recipients are increasingly being offered religious salvation through the power of spam, according to security company MessageLabs.

The antispam company has intercepted a large number of spiritual e-mails in the last month. The company says the e-mails are legal because they don't plug products, just religious ideals.

That would be religious ideals like a Christian loan company or offers to get laid via a Chrstian dating service.

Today's special is spam

A most amusing Nigerian spam arrived in my mailbox just now, apparently sent to an address at antipope.org from one in South Africa:

Fleecing the gullible

Several layers of effective filtering ensures that spam rarely makes it through the hallowed portals of Prattle Towers, so I never had the pleasure of seeing half-a-dozen copies of the egregious spam sent by Christian Debt Management, who offer Professional debt counseling with a Christian perspective. They don't indicate how their service is particularly Christian - perhaps I should mail them and ask. But we know they're really, really professional. After all, their carefully targetted e-mail went to a scotsgay.co.uk address - that must be a US-based Christian.

Dear Sir,
I have a business proposal which I know might interest you. My name is REV.Dr.FRANCIS TAMA, A Rev and a medical Doctor, the sole proprietor of the above specialist Hospital and also the REVEREND of the above church. I understand that through Internet is not the best way to link up with you because of the confidentiality which the transaction demands.

However, I have already sent you this same letter by post one month ago, but I am not sure if it did get to you since I have not heard from you, hence my resending it again. I have a widow here in my Clinic who is on a political Asylum in Abidjan-Cote d'Ivoire Refugee Camp, she has been so ill for some couple of months now. This woman confided in me based on the free medical attention I have been giving to her and her children.

She had revealed to me of her life history and about her late husband who was a top military officer in one of the west African country(Sierra-Leone) before his death during the civil war and the fortune she inherited from her late husband. She has asked me to source a credible and trust worthy partner abroad who will manage her funds for investment, the sum of Twenty Eight Million US Dollars (US$28m) which her late husband deposited in a safe Fiduciary Agent in Europe through a Security Company based in Abidjan.

I wish to chose you for this venture and I believe you will be in the position to assist in managing this large sum in a profitable venture and also to help create a safe heaven for her and her children by making a residence arrangement for them in your country. After she had disclosed this information to me; I saw the reason to request from her to allow me see the documents relating to this deposit of which she did, now I have the documents covering the deposit which I will not hesitate to fax to you the copies as a prove for your confirmation as soon as I receive your response via email.

I am obliged to assist this lady knowing too well that she has a limited knowledge in the business world and as such she can not manage this funds her self and in Africa in order to avoid any trace of her by the government, I will need from you a mutual understanding and then we shall make plans on how the funds would be secured into an account in your name; after which you will arrange and travel immediately to meet with the security company Agent in Europe for clearing.

This amount is contained in a sealed trunk box and it is registered and declared as containing family treasures, so even as I am writing you now the security company and it's Agent is not aware that there is cash money in the trunk, let me assure you that this transaction is 100% hitch and risk free, from my discussion with her, she has agreed to give you a reasonable amount of percentage for your involvement in this and this has to be discussed upon the receipt of your quick response.

Thanks and God bless for your understanding,

Sincere regards,

News: shorts

United States: In September, according to prosecutors, Dan Koenigsberg schemed to harass Mel Henderson, the only black member of the Teaneck, N. J., city council, during a meeting being shown live on local TV. Koenigsberg hired a messenger to dress in a gorilla costume and to bring Henderson a bunch of bananas, a toy monkey, and two balloons with drawings of monkeys on them. Koenigsberg later apologized in a letter to a local newspaper: My intention was not to bring race into the political debate.
