Former altar boy may sue over abuse

United Kingdom: A former altar boy has been given the go-ahead to bring a case the Archbishop of Birmingham and the Trustees of the Birmingham Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church. The 36 year old claims that he was abused by Father Christopher Clonan in 1975 and that the Church was negligent.

The Archbishop and the Trustees deny liability and say that Mr Grey's injuries are attributable to a pre-existing personality vulnerability and family circumstances. They argued that it was now too late to bring the claim.

It cannot be pursued against Father Clonan, described in court as a dynamic and popular priest known as Father Chris, because he fled the country when complaints became known in 1992 and has not been found.

This is thought to be the first time a case has been brought against the Church rather than the alleged abuser. Ex-altar Boy Cleared To Sue Church Over Childhood AbuseThe Guardian, June 14th 2002.
